My One Thing
In (..the really great book..) The One Thing, Gary Keller emphasizes the value of focusing on a single task.
Early in the book he introduces the “focusing question”: “What’s the ONE thing I can do such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
This idea stuck with me – like annoyingly so – and led me to examine the key areas of my life to decide where my focus should be.
In doing this I noticed something.
The biggest threat to all my goals was distraction. And the biggest source of distraction? My phone.
The most powerful action I could take was simple…put down my phone!
I want dedicated time each day to talk to God, to read, write, pray, and walk, ensuring my head and heart are steady. So, I put down my phone.
I want to be in tune with my husband’s life, and I want him to be in tune with mine. I want us to have aligned goals, shared dreams, and deep conversations—beyond the daily routine updates. So, I put down my phone.
I want to connect with my kids – really connect. I want to hear their stories, let conversations flow naturally, without a ticking clock or divided attention. So, I put down my phone.
I want to know my friends, truly know them. I want to celebrate their wins and support them through challenges. So, I put down my phone.
I want to train, stay fit, and give myself the best shot at a healthy body and mind. So, I put down my phone.

But let’s be honest, it’s not always easy. Responsibilities, especially with kids, often demand being connected.
Yet, sometimes, “staying connected” is just a habit.
Have you ever picked up your phone to check one message and found yourself mindlessly scrolling through social media minutes later? All because your subconscious saw a red notification dot and, before you knew it, you were lost in the scroll, having never checked the message!
I did, more often than I feel comfortable admitting! So I became intentional about it, and PUT DOWN MY PHONE!

This simple but MASSIVE realisation made a difference, like a BIG one.
It worked for me.
