Are You a Level 1?

Published On: January 25, 2025

This is a concept I simply have to share…

On a trip last year, I picked it up from my friend Mel. It’s her brilliant way of categorizing, well… people.

And once you hear it, I guarantee you’ll start using it too, it’s very catchy!

Quick Caveat…there is a good chance I have some of the finer details wrong, but here’s the gist…

There are 3 levels of people in a group…

  • Level 1s: The master organizers. They have checked the weather, have the tickets, and have a backup plan for the backup plan. Listen to them and you’ll be golden.
  • Level 2s: They could be Level 1s if needed but are perfectly happy letting someone else take the reins. A solid second-in-command for when things get tricky
  • Level 3s: Absolute chaos in human form. They don’t know the plans, should never be left unsupervised, and if you group them together… let’s just say, don’t.

Here’s what I have noticed…

These levels work with every day life as well as they do for travel or events.

And honestly, they’ve been surprisingly accurate.

Like a kind of archetype classification or something!

In my personal life, I’m usually Level 1, occasionally level 2, but level 3?

Secretly I dream of more level 3 moments!

On most days…

I’ve got the kids’ schedules memorized, the menus under control, and the ability to time our departures down to the second – even when someone suddenly decides they need an entire outfit change now.

I am lucky though, I have a great level 2 (Hi Ruan!)- who is actually a better level 1 than me – he is just very busy!

He is on the school whatsapp and sports groups, shares a google drive and calendar with me so can easily transition to level 1 when he can!

HOT TIP – Get a strong Level 2 in your life asap!

But, When it comes to work, I am happiest Level one’ ing!

I know exactly what needs to happen, when it’s due, and precisely what “done” must look like. In other words….

I tend to level one the sh*t out of projects!

Occasionally, I have be level two.

(Note: This requires major patience when there’s a level three in charge!)

The thing about these levels is that they give us permission to step into (or out of) roles, depending on what we (or the situation) need.

Some days, you’ve got to Level 1 like a boss. Other days, you might need to hand over the reins, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Which level do you spend most of your time as?

Are you the one holding it all together? Maybe it’s time to level-down to level 2 or even (…gasp…) channel your inner Level 3?

Whatever it is, I have a feeling you’ll recognise yourself and others as levels now!

When you do – think of me (and my friend Mel!)
