Write the Email

A full house and zero time didn’t stop this week’s email. When you focus on a process that works, you can create—even in the chaos.

Published On: April 16, 2025

I thought last week was cutting it fine! This one’s worse

It’s been a crazy day…

4 sick children

3 workmen in my house all day installing cupboards and shelving

2 massive deadlines

1 me

Needless to say, this email very nearly wasn’t written or sent – which would have broken 16 weeks of dedication and consistency.

Not on my watch…

So I am sitting down to write this with the same commitment my son has to his “snap streaks”.

(shoutout to all the parents who know what I am talking about!)

The problem with doing this, like this, is that this is NOT my process (one I have been asked about on numerous occasions)

So instead of following my process to write this email, I will rather write this email to teach you my process.

It’s short, straightforward and easy to remember should you ever want to give it a try yourself!

Sound good? Hope so, cos there is no time for other options now.

Step 1: What to write about

When I tell you there are emails everywhere, it’s gospel.

That random thought you had, the strange comment the man behind the counter made, the joke your child told, the not so funny meeting at school… are all potential emails.

I use my phone’s notes app as well as Notion to keep a collection of thoughts, ideas, rough drafts etc.

You never know when one hits, so having my phone means it may survive a little longer!

Step 2: The draft of the draft

Writing my weekly email is the highlight of my work week.

I block time during the weekend and settle in with comfy pants, steaming coffee and music to match my mood. Want to see me happy – come watch. Want to see me unhappy – talk to me!

Writing at this stage involves getting all my thoughts on the page, organising them, researching facts or details and then bringing it all together into a 95% done draft.

Step 3: Edit the draft

Before the end of the weekend, I re-read my work – cut and edit all the bits that no longer excite me and then give it to my husband Ruan to proofread.

He is excellent!

If he ever leaves surgery he’ll be my first full time hire!

He is however currently unwell as I mentioned above- so apologies in advance for typos etc! (so yes, I have 3 sick kids and a sick husband ;) ).

Step 4: Write the email, and you guessed it – edit again!

By now my subconscious has been working on my email for at least 4 days so ideas have developed and new ones crept in. I rework the details until it matches what I had in mind.

I then check spelling, grammar, formatting and hit send!

Step 4: Pray for a good response.

It’s true that I write these emails because I love it.

It’s also true that I hope you enjoy them.

So I wait – for responses, comments, any sign of life and esp any sign of enjoyment!

And that’s it!

At this point it’s Wednesday and I have 2 days to start thinking about what to write for next week and the cycle repeats!

Want to give it a go yourself? Go for it – and send me the link to join!

Now, I had better get back to the 700 things waiting for me.

Just to be clear – there was no draft of this email, it has not been proof-read, and nothing was researched!

I hope you enjoyed it non-the-less!

Let me know…. I’ll be waiting!
