Build it and they won’t come.
That was the first thing my business coach said.
He was right! We had started a business – the website was up and running, the stock was all neatly packed and we had exactly zero customers.
So what now?
Well they will come eventually, he said, but only once you have all the pieces in place. And luckily he knew the pieces!
I’ll share step 1, cos there is some psychology to it that is interesting!
Understand who you are helping.
Sounds straightforward enough. But the problem is that I have this theory…
True reality will always escape us. I believe that everything we experience is relative.

What do you know about relativity?
Yes, there is a theory about it.
Yes, it was written by Einstein.
I have tried on numerous occasions to understand the Theory of Relativity, but I generally don’t get further than …”Albert Einstein wrote the theory of relativity.”
I think it’s because I have no intention of travelling at the speed of light, and I don’t understand what a heavy ball and a mattress have to do with space and time.
But, more to the point…have you heard of Philosophical Relativity?
In summary, it’s the idea that reality and truth are observer dependent. It’s a real thing! I am not the only one who thought about it!
Our sensory perceptions of the world (such as sight, hearing, touch) are shaped by 3 things – our context, our expectations, and our individual sense organs.
And …All facts and knowledge are considered true based on experience, beliefs and biases.
Why does this matter?
Because if you want someone to see what you see, experience what you do, or take some sort of action you have to start by understanding where they are coming from.
It also means that you have the ability to change reality by changing thoughts and ideas.
So back to my coach and step 1 of business building…
I needed to not only understand the people I was trying to help, but also what they needed to believe about their lives, problems and my solution in order to take action.
And that is one of the fundamental principles of “marketing” anything!
Including ….A home reno project to your spouse (true story!), bedtime to your kids (another true story) or a business plan to your brother (yip, also!)
So some things to think about:

How are your thoughts, ideas and beliefs shaping your current reality?

Do you understand the point of view of the people around you?

If you did, how much easier would it be to share an idea, encourage action or make a sale?
