Touch Points and No Trust

It’s officially winter in South Africa!

I am writing to you in a comfy tracksuit and thick socks!

We have done a fair amount of traveling this year, and looks like the second half may be similar. This has brought on some unplanned purchases – including a suitcase.

You’d think this would be straight forward – but it was far from! 100% Analysis paralysis….over a suitcase!

Have you also noticed something different about your buying habits lately? How the moment between discovering something and actually purchasing it seems to be stretching longer and longer…

If so –  you’re not imagining it – and we ‘re definitely not alone.

The Edelman Trust Barometer does not paint a great picture in 2025.

The truth is, everyone is taking more time to make decisions.

If you have a business, you’re probably noticing that your customers need more convincing before they take the plunge.

Why? Because TRUST has taken a serious hit.

Between AI-generated everything, unchecked information flooding our feeds, and scammers getting scarily sophisticated, we’ve all become way more… cautious.

And the numbers back this up!

Research shows that a warm lead (someone who already knows about you and has shown interest) now needs 5-12 meaningful interactions before buying.

But a cold lead (someone just discovering you for the first time) needs an incredible 20-50 touchpoints! The average sits at 28.87 interactions.

That’s not a typo. Nearly 30 times they need to experience you or your brand before trusting enough to buy!

And here is the real kicker – they are subconsciously looking for reasons NOT to trust you!

But in a world of increasing fakes, you have the opportunity to stand out!

People do business with people they know, like, and trust. It doesn’t matter if you’re an athlete looking for sponsorship or someone selling handmade candles online.

And remember, people are researching you LONG before you’re aware of them!

So what can you do about it?

  1. Audit your digital presence. Got a LinkedIn profile you forget about? Did you start a blog once and lose steam? What will someone find if they Google your name? Be honest – is it consistent? Is it current? Is it YOU?

  2. Get crystal clear on how you want to show up in the world. Who are you? What do you stand for? What do you offer the world? These aren’t just marketing questions – they’re your foundation.

  3. Build a digital presence that is consistent, unique, and 100% authentically you! This isn’t about being everywhere – it’s about being intentional where you are, and showing up the same way!

If you take just one thing from this email, let it be this

We’re all navigating this weird mix of overwhelm and overexposure. But a real human showing up with something real to say…That’s where the magic still lives.

Oh And…if people are looking for reasons not to trust you… give them none. Not one. Be so consistent, so clear, and so you that they have no choice but to lean in.
