The Hidden Cost of Doing Nothing
“Just leave it,” she said. “I can’t,” I replied.
There are many things I don’t understand about people, but two are:
- Their acceptance of mediocrity
- Their belief that doing nothing somehow preserves the status quo.
The first is unfortunate. The second is just plain wrong.

Here’s why: ENTROPY
- Ice left on a counter melts.
- Buildings left unmaintained crumble
- Relationships left unnurtured dissolve
It was first described by German physicist and mathematician Rudolf Clausius in 1865, as a mathematical definition within the context of thermodynamics, but apllies to everything!
The Myth of Maintenance
The summary of this idea is that everything tends towards disorder. Disorder is the default. Order is always unnatural and temporary, and therefore requires energy to maintain.
I love this quote from Steven Pinker:
“The ultimate purpose of life, mind, and human striving: to deploy energy and information to fight back the tide of entropy and carve out refuges of beneficial order.”
You don’t get to do nothing!
Thinking you’ll maintain the status quo by doing nothing is impossible. Just to stay where you are requires energy.
- Maintaining a tidy house requires effort
- Preserving team culture needs attention
- Keeping your skills current requires learning
- Your workspace reverts to chaos without intervention
- Your physical strength and fitness decline without training – use it or lose it!
And the way I see it –
If you’re already spending energy just to stay in place, why not spend a little more and move forward?
Momentum Is Intentional
We don’t have endless time or endless energy. They’re finite resources. Which means how we spend them is crucial. You have to know what matters and you need a plan.
In my own life I use my planner. It’s simple and straightforward and makes sure I get the right sh*t done!
I have attached it HERE in case it’s of use, or interest to you. (Feel free to make a copy and edit it!)
To build a brand you have to create momentum! It’s showing up, learning, refining, and choosing action over apathy….EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.
