Trust Me

Published On: July 16, 2025

I’m not ashamed to admit it – I’m a people-watcher. But lately? It’s the listening that’s got me hooked.

Because sometimes, if you pay close enough attention, you catch a moment that reveals sooooo much.

The lies we tell

Last week, two guys bounced over me as they exited the sports shop, grinning like they’d won something.

Both were clutching their shopping bags and I could feel my ears adjusting..

“Bro, I can’t believe we just got these for that price,” the first guy said.

“I know,” his friend replied, “what a deal.” His voice filled with pride. A hint of panic rising…

“Think about it,” he went on…

“I know I’ve got loads of shoes, but that’s actually a really good thing, cos then they don’t wear out as fast.”

The emotional truth behind every purchase

There it is.

I watched them pay their parking ticket, and all I could think was: Zig Ziglar called it decades ago.

“People buy with emotion and justify with logic.”

Once you see this pattern, you can’t unsee it.

Every ad, sales email, and sponsored post you DON’T ignore has been well engineered to make you feel something.

It’s not bad. It’s just business. But it does mean we need to start asking better questions – especially when that fluttery “I need this!” feeling shows up.

Before you click “add to cart”…

Next time you’re about to click “add to cart,” try asking:

  • What problem am I really trying to solve?
  • Will this purchase solve it?
  • Am I buying the thing – or the feeling I think it will give me?
  • That way you can appreciate the craft while still making decisions that serve you.

Where marketing meets integrity

For the last 5 years I have called myself a marketer.

But, I despise manipulation, sneaky tactics, and anything designed to trick people into buying what they shouldn’t.

What I do believe in is this:

If you offer something amazing – something that can genuinely change someone’s life – then you owe it to them to share it with clarity and honesty.

Emotion matters. Story matters. But integrity matters more.

How to sell with trust

The next time someone tries to sell you something, tune in to what you’re feeling.

And the next time you’re selling something? Make sure you’re:

  1. Leading with the real transformation you offer – not just the shiny features.
  2. Making people feel seen, not sold to.
  3. Telling the truth, and refusing to fake urgency, fake sales, or vanity metrics – manipulation might get clicks, but it kills credibility.
  4. Owning your expertise – not with arrogance, but with calm, grounded authority.
  5. Never inflating who you are or where you’re at – the stage you’re in right now is the perfect place to start from.

Because that’s how you build trust. And that’s how you build a brand that lasts.
