My stationary list for grade one arrived. I clearly remember the confusion about two specific things: a “where is it book” and “100 burnt match sticks” (remember this, mom?).
The book turned out to be an alphabetically indexed book. I can still smell the burnt match sticks.
Also in grade 1, we went away for the weekend with friends, and friends of friends. I remember thinking…
“Unsuccessful people have more fun.”
I was 8 years old.

Unpacking my 8-year-old observation
To really unpack my seemingly judgemental observation, I need to consider what “success” and “fun” were, and are.
My definition of success has changed surprisingly little since then.
What success looks like to me
To me, successful people are (in no particular order):
- People who take what they were given in life and do something with it
- People who are in the position to do things that make them happy
- People who lead people to be better versions of themselves
- People who build happy families and spend time with them
- People who build a life that gives them choices
- People who have time off
To me, my dad was (and is) successful. But my dad had rules, which made him seem a little less fun at the time.
My definition of fun changed
Luckily, my definition of fun changed dramatically as I grew up.
At 8, fun was no rules, no restrictions, no bedtime.
My definition of fun now? Pretty much the same as my definition of success.
It’s FUN to take any opportunities and run with them. It’s FUN to plan a life on your terms. It’s FUN to experience new places. It’s FUN to see the people around you doing well. It’s FUN to do things as a family. And it’s FUN to read a book on a Sunday afternoon.
The truth about the 1%
My earlier observation was therefore tested the older I got.
Now… Successful people have more fun. And… big shock… they have rules.
You see, they are the 1%. And to be the 1%, they are prepared to do what 99% of people aren’t.
The 99% let the moment decide. They drift toward comfort, operate on vague hopes, and rarely know exactly what needs to be done to get where they want to go. In some ways, they never moved past my 8-year-old definition of having fun.
But the 1%? They make hard promises to themselves and others — and keep them.
When 99 people choose what feels good right now, that 1 person chooses what serves their future.
Because here’s the truth:
- Potential means little
- Natural talent will only take you so far
- Luck runs out
- Commitment and hard work will get you further every day of the week
You may be wondering why we needed 100 burnt matches at school. They were to teach us to count.
Matches have the potential to set the world on fire if they can burn long enough or have the right conditions.
And they definitely can’t if they are already burnt. (Which works better in a school setting.)
In life, when there are 99 others, you want to be the one that lights up the room.
Matches don’t have choices, but you do!
