Eulogy K Goller

Published On: October 1, 2025

I got back from Knysna over the weekend and walked into my office Monday morning ready to dive back in.

Except I couldn’t.

It felt too full.

Most people would think it looked pretty organized, but I knew the truth – shelves lined with files I haven’t opened in years, cupboards stuffed with things that were just stealing space. Like those boxes expensive tech comes in. (Seriously, does anyone know why we keep them?)

And I just knew – this mess was going to kill my creativity.

So instead of fighting the feeling and catching up on work –  I spring cleaned instead. (kinda appropriate considering the season in South Africa!)

Two full refuse bags later, I’d cleared out all the paperwork from visa applications, random notes that made zero sense to me now, and a collection of empty files – because who has enough paper documents these days to justify more than one physical file?

But here’s the thing about cleaning up – I didn’t just find junk.

I found treasure too.

Buried in the chaos, I found notes from courses I took at the very beginning of this journey. Reading them now, it’s clear how little I knew back then.

I also found something that stopped me – the printed accompanying notes from a book I read in 2021.

Donald Miller’s StoryBrand training changed the way I would approach brand messaging forever – in fact, it was what introduced me to this specialized subsection of marketing that I now focus on.

And it also introduced me to his other book: Hero on a Mission.

In 2021, I had no idea what I was going to do.

I knew physiotherapy was behind me. I knew I had fallen hopelessly in love with the marketing world. And I knew how to build and grow an online business – at that stage, our e-commerce business had just doubled in sales for the second year in a row.

But I didn’t know what MY story was supposed to be.

Now, I could give you a full breakdown of the book, but there’s too much and this email would be looooonnngggg!

So my best suggestion? Consider buying the book (CLICK HERE) and for now remember one key thing…

On page 77, Donald writes…

“The Hero does not lose the plot in their own story.”

Later on the page…

“One morning they wake up and realize they are a thousand miles down a road they never intended to travel. But how did they lose the plot in the first place? By surrendering their personal agency to outside forces rather than determining their own story and living into it day after day.”

One of the key exercises he takes you through to avoid this is to write your own eulogy.

It sounds like such a morbid thing to do, but when you change the way you view it – it’s incredibly powerful!

Assume you’ll die at a reasonably old age and write out what you want your story to say.

I wrote mine in 2021, and it was one of the papers I found in my big clean up.

I haven’t read it for years, but it must have had a massive impact on my life because four years later, it’s incredible to see how consistent I’ve been with the vision I set for myself back then.

The business I’ve built, the clients I’ve chosen to work with, the way I show up for my family, the values I refuse to compromise on – it’s all there, written out in my handwriting from 2021.

One of the things I judge myself on everyday, and that I am still working very hard on was written on the page too, it says…

“To those who knew her, Kira will be remembered as someone who lived her life with purpose, kindness and balance…. and who felt like sunshine”

No matter how old you are when you’re reading this, if you’re breathing, there’s still time to add to, change, or confirm what your life story will be.

So here’s what I want you to do:

Block out 30 minutes this week. Grab a notebook and pen – go old school-  and write your eulogy.

Not the sad, short version that gets read at funerals. The real one. The one that captures who you were, what you stood for, what you built, and how you made people feel.

Then ask yourself: Am I living in a way that’s writing this story? Or am I a thousand miles down the wrong road?

Are you brave enough to write yours? Or is this too weird?

(reply – I want to know!)
