It’s Hard!

Published On: October 15, 2025

Exactly a year ago Alex Cattoni asked me to speak on stage at her marketing event.

“Just tell everyone how far you’ve come in such a short time.” she said.

My brain immediately went: It’s not that far! I haven’t hit half my goals. What will people think?

But my mouth said: “Sure, I’d love to.”

In preparation I sat down to make some notes about where I started, what I’d done, where I was…

Holy shit.

It was pretty damn far.

At the time I’d just finished writing the messaging framework for a division of a massive international consulting firm’s relaunch. 5 years earlier I was a practicing physio.

Because I was busy measuring the gap between where I was and where I wanted to be, I’d missed how far I’d actually traveled, even though I knew how hard it had been.

For anyone with a spark

To everyone who has ever had a spark in their chest to do something bigger than what was expected of you.

Maybe you have a business idea. Maybe you have a child with big dreams. Maybe there’s a cause close to your heart. Whatever it is, please understand what I’m about to tell you.

It’s going to be harder than you think. And for none of the reasons you expect.

I thought it would be the long hours.

The hard work.

Handling my nerves in big moments, dealing with rejection, or figuring out the technical stuff.

Turns out? I was surprisingly fine with all of that.

But here’s 3 places I still get tripped up…

  1. The tug-of-war.

We’ve been told to stand out, but fit in.

Find your voice and own it, but don’t be too loud.

Dream big, aim high, but be realistic.

Get out there, but not too far out there.

So which one is it? Which message are we supposed to follow?

No wonder we’re all walking around second-guessing every bold move we make.

2.  The bar never stops moving, so you miss the chances to celebrate

Remember when you were a kid? Report cards. Awards ceremonies. Someone literally announcing your progress to a room full of people.

Yeah, that stops.

Now? Success is built on micro-wins that happen so quietly you don’t even notice them. You handle something that would’ve leveled you two years ago. You navigate a difficult conversation you couldn’t have managed six months ago.

Your confidence grows, your capability swells, but there’s no ceremony. No one rings a bell.

And as a result there is rarely a moment to shake you out of the grind and force you to look up and see how far you have come.

We just re-calibrate our normal and keep going.

3. People are weird.

Some will support you. Some will find you threatening. Some will roll their eyes. Some will forward your emails and share your posts. Some will shake their heads. Some will be proud of you.

Some will just never understand.

How I handle it now

Before I lose you in all the doom and gloom, let me share how I’m currently handling these three:

I’m sure about my values and my non-negotiables. I never lie, cheat, or steal. I will never intentionally hurt, mock, or ridicule someone. With these guardrails in my back pocket, I can go out and get shit done without second-guessing every move.
I actively notice the micro-wins. I actively look for all the little moments in the day that signal I’m moving forward. I stop. I thank God. I tell myself I’m proud of me.

People have my blessing to feel however they want about me. I can’t please everyone. I can’t be everyone’s cup of tea. But I spend the most time with myself – so best I please myself.

Standing on that stage taught me something Alex probably didn’t intend: The hard part wasn’t the work I’d done to get there, it was all the unexpected hurdles.

A year later, I’m still fighting the tug of war, still measuring gaps, still buffering people, but WAY LESS!

So if you’ve got that spark – and I know you do – take anything that can help from this email, and go chase it.

Go do big things!
