On Nail Color

Published On: November 5, 2025

“Those will have to go,” the hospital ward head said, looking at my brand new neon pink nails. Perfectly neat and short.

As she continued onto some justification I didn’t care about, I could feel the dominoes falling in my head.

I’d been thinking about leaving physio for a while. I loved building the business side of the practice. The strategy, the systems, the growth. But the clinical side had lost all appeal.

The whispers had been there for months. Quiet but persistent.

None loud enough to actually do anything about, though.

Until the nails.

Standing there being told that something so small (in my opinion), but so me, had to go? Easy decision!

The truth is it was never about the nails. They were just the last compromise left I could actually see.

A thousand tiny compromises

I’d been making tiny compromises, but none of them felt dramatic enough to justify leaving. Each one was manageable on its own.

But together? Death by a thousand cuts!

My dad taught me something years ago that I still use daily:

“Choose your Southern Cross, Kira.

Then for every decision you make ask yourself 3 questions:

  • Does this take me closer to it?
  • Does this take me further away?
  • Does this make me reconsider where I’m headed entirely?”

Standing there looking at my pink nails, I knew my answer!

The 180-degree pivot

What followed was a rather drastic 180-degree career pivot.

I fought hard, I invested hundreds of thousands, and I have never felt so confident in who I am and what I do.

Last week I sat down with a well-known sporting celebrity to help with brand strategy. Imagine. I was a practicing physio only six years ago!

The Southern Cross isn’t just some nice philosophy my dad once shared. It’s the most practical business tool I’ve ever used.

Which brings me to you.

Most people don’t have a nail polish moment.

They have years of quiet compromises that never quite add up to something dramatic enough to act on.

So here’s what I want you to think about:

Who are you today and who do you want to be?

A fun way to do this is to write your own eulogy. (If you missed my email on that you can read it by clicking here).

Or I can help you. It’s what I do for a living now!

What compromises are you making daily?

None of them may feel big enough to walk away from. But together? They’re quietly reshaping you into someone you never intended to become.

Why are you waiting for a nail polish moment to change it?

Maybe you have a very good reason, and that’s fine. But being aware of it makes all the difference.

And here ends the lesson!
